First, a word of explanation: This special double-record set containstwo Genesis albums originally released in 1971 ("NURSERY CRYME") and 1972("FOXTROT"). Due to various problems, in the past few years they have notbeen available in the U.S.A. Now, at last, we are again able to properlypresent these landmark recordings to the public. Newcomers to the Genesiscamp should be delighted by these early masterworks (to this day the bandplays selections from them in their live shows); and the stalwart supportersof the past eight years or so will no doubt be ecstatic to have fresh copies.

Secondly, a word (or two) of description: These two albums representthe first fully-formed statements by a band on the verge of internationalstardom, a band positively unique in the history of rock. For the recordingof "NURSERY CRYME," original members Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel & MichaelRutherford were joined by new recruits Phil Collins & Steve Hackett. The combination produced a sound that meant magic to those early fiercelydevoted followers. The music was complex, yet highly accessible, very melodic, emotional and dramatic; the approach was orchestral yet subtle; the Iyricalthemes drew on myth, legend, fantasy and satire. These two albums includesuch acknowledged rock masterpieces as "WATCHER OF THE SKIES," "MUSICALBOX," "FOUNTAINS OF SALMACIS," and the incredible, ide-long epic "SUPPER'SREADY' At the same time, the* theatrical live performances advanced thestate of rock a few light years, complete with a sophisticated use of costumingand mime (in the person of vocalist Peter Gabriel), plus superior soundand lighting. But above all, there was indescribable magic in the music.

Today of course, Genesis ranks as one of the very top bands aroundthe world, with sell-out tours and million-selling records. Peter Gabrieland Steve Hackett have departed the group to pursue solo careers, withTony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford carrying on the Genesis torchto an ever-growing audience. To their credit, Genesis has always been oneof the most imitated bands around .. . but no one else has ever been ableto duplicate their unique sonic recipe.
